Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most special moments in life, and capturing it through photography is a beautiful way to preserve those memories. But choosing the right photographer can feel overwhelming—there are so many options, styles, and details to consider! Here’s how to make the best choice for you and your growing family.
Understanding Photography Styles
Just like any other type of artist, photographers each have a unique style they excel at. Some specialize in dreamy, light-filled studio portraits, while others capture raw, natural moments outdoors. Some create cozy, in-home lifestyle sessions that feel intimate and personal. Before choosing a photographer, think about the style that resonates with you most. Do you want classic, posed images? Candid, storytelling moments? A mix of both?
Hidden Perks That Make Life Easier
A great photographer doesn’t just take pictures—they create an experience. Some photographers offer client closets, which means you don’t have to worry about shopping for the perfect outfit. They provide wardrobe options that fit their aesthetic, ensuring everything looks cohesive and polished in the final images. Others have fully set-up studios with themed setups, cozy nursery spaces, or even seasonal backdrops, making it effortless for you to get the perfect shot. There are photogs out there who will also travel to lovely outdoor scenes like gardens to add greenery and beautiful blooms for your cherished moments. If you're planning a one-year milestone session, some photographers even offer smash cakes—a fun, stress-free way to celebrate!

Comfort & Connection Matter
Beyond style and offerings, it’s crucial to find a photographer whose personality matches yours. You want someone who makes you feel comfortable, especially in those vulnerable postpartum moments. If they’ll be working with your newborn, their ability to handle babies gently and patiently is key. For family sessions, a photographer who knows how to engage toddlers and capture their genuine smiles is priceless!
Additionally, if you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community, you might want to seek out a photographer who is openly inclusive and understands the unique comfort levels needed to create a truly safe and welcoming space.
Local Photographer Spotlight: Capturing Motherhood with Heart
Here is a short interview I did with an awesome photographer local to Richmond, Virginia. She has a gift for capturing the naturally sweet essence of the people she photographs—whether it's a sleepy newborn, a glowing mama, or a giggly toddler. Her light and airy style creates the perfect backdrop for the real stars of the photo: the faces, the personalities, and the fleeting little moments you’ll want to remember forever. Specializing in motherhood, newborn, and young family photography, her work feels both timeless and full of heart.

When you're choosing a newborn or motherhood photographer, it’s about so much more than just a pretty picture. You want someone who understands the beauty (and chaos) of this season, who can make you feel comfortable and seen—and who creates keepsakes you'll treasure for decades. I recently had the chance to chat with a local gem in the Richmond area, and her answers speak for themselves. Q: How would you describe your photography style and approach?
A: I lean toward a light and airy style, using natural light. My goal isn’t just to take pictures—it’s to create an experience. I want to preserve the real, tender memories between a mom and her children.
Q: How long have you been photographing babies and families?
A: I’ve been a newborn and motherhood photographer for 20 years.
Q: Do you prefer outdoor or studio sessions? What are the perks of each?
A: I personally love studio sessions because they give me a blank canvas to work with—it’s a clean, calm space where I can really highlight the connection between mom and baby. But I also adore Richmond’s many gorgeous outdoor venues. Nature brings its own magic.

Q: How do you help clients feel relaxed and confident during a session?
A: I keep things super low-pressure and go with the flow. My sessions are very child-led. If a little one wants to play with a toy, we work that into the moment. If they want to stay snuggled up in mom’s arms, I’m all for it. I also offer a large client closet and work with a talented hair and makeup artist—both of us are moms, too, and we get it. We help moms feel beautiful and seen, even if they just rolled in from a sleepless night.
Q: What accommodations do you offer specifically for postpartum moms?
A: I’ve carefully curated my wardrobe with flattering, flowy dresses that help moms feel comfortable and radiant. And again, the hair and makeup—sometimes you just need someone else to make you feel a little more like “you” again. We’re not about glam for the sake of glam; we’re about lifting moms up.
Q: What's one piece of advice you'd give to parents looking for the right photographer?
A: Look through the photographer’s actual portfolio. Don’t choose someone based on a Pinterest photo that doesn't match their style. Hire someone whose work truly inspires you and feels aligned with what you’re envisioning.
Q: What’s your favorite part of working with new moms and babies?
A: The love. That’s what keeps me coming back. My “why” is to create art that speaks to both the mom and the child. When I was growing up, there were barely any pictures of my mom and me—and now, even in an age where we’re constantly snapping photos, we rarely cherish them. I want to change that. I want to create pieces that are meant to be printed, displayed, and loved for years—not just posted and forgotten.

Q: Why should someone choose you as their photographer?
A: I bring over 20 years of experience photographing children and families, and I’m committed to creating a stress-free experience. My style is timeless and classic, not based on trends. I want every mom to walk away with images that feel like art—and that stand the test of time.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right newborn or motherhood photographer isn’t just about pricing or availability—it’s about finding someone who understands your vision, makes you feel at ease, and offers a seamless experience. Take time to browse portfolios, read reviews, and even schedule a quick chat to ensure they’re the right fit for you. After all, these moments are fleeting, and you deserve to have them captured in a way that feels true to you.
